Super United get revenge!

Last weekend Calgary was unprepared; surprised by a solid Saskatoon squad, outworked and out willed. This past weekend the real Calgary United showed up in Saskatoon to play the pivotal game of the season. The game would be tricky; on a rubber tile surface that the home team had mastered and on which they had never been defeated. Tricky appeared to be an understatement when the Accelerators took a 2-0 lead on their first two shifts! Saskatoon’s 12-2 defeat of Edmonton suddenly became understandable...and real …and a similar result a real possibility. Take a deep breath, focus, bear down and……

Calgary gradually got a tighter grip on the forwards, got to the ball first, found space and created a few chances; and then a few more. Napuri battered and finessed, Yamada and Reyes conducted and connived, Kooy directed…. and the team stepped it up a notch… and then another.  0-2 slowly and inexorably changed to 2-2 and then 4-2, by the end of the first quarter, and then 5-2. This is more like it boys, keep it going! But the funny thing about this league is that you can never relax, the job is never done before the final whistle, especially on the lively surface of the Henk Ruys Centre. Beeno Looft added the Accelerators third and at 5-3 Calgary hearts began to flutter. But just seconds later Pat Kelly added Calgary’s sixth to reinstate the gap and quell the fears, temporarily at least.

Two quick Calgary goals just after halftime made it 8-3 and United sensed that a good result was on the horizon, and at the third quarter break this score remained. Just stay composed, keep the ball, don’t force it, use the full field…..
But shortly into the fourth quarter Saskatoon pulled one back and once again the jitters appeared.  A four goal lead is huge, right…at least it appeared that way last week when we were behind by 0-4. But today it seemed so vulnerable, so attainable. Even when Napuri made it 9-4 to open up the five goal difference again a comeback did not seem impossible.

Calgary could not, would not relax. Coach Flannery wagged fingers, grabbed shirts and stared into players faces to make them focus, make them stay disciplined and make them concentrate. With more than five minutes left Saskatoon pulled their goalie for a sixth attacker and implemented the high press and almost immediately reduced the deficit. And then with a minute remaining they added another and even with only 60 seconds left it seemed possible that they could come back. Such is this wild and wacky indoor game.

But 9-6 was as close as they got, and United had won.  Felix Napuri had 3 goals and 3 assists and Kelly, Yamada and Reyes had multi-point nights; oh, and Jesic scored another goal...he asked me to mention it. This performance was about more than personal glory, though. The team showed that their pride and experience would not allow them to be surprised twice and that they had the will to push back and eventually …win.

Following the victory CUFC has 16 points, still 2 points behind the Accelerators, but now their fate is in their own hands. Calgary must win their games against Winnipeg this coming weekend to qualify for the North American finals in San Diego. Winnipeg is 3-7 on the season. Easy right… sure… remember Saskatoon at home??

Saskatoon stuns Calgary 6-4!

It was a case of not knowing what to expect, really.  Sure, Saskatoon came into the Subway Centre leading the league and with a record of 8-2, but their opponents to date were unknown to Calgary and not regarded as top tier teams.  The only measuring stick that United had was the Accelerators’ games against Edmonton and there was no denying that the Drillers had thrashed them 13-2 in Edmonton.   Saskatoon had repaid the compliment with a 12-2 drubbing of the Drillers in Saskatoon, but this was because Saskatoon plays on a rubberized tile surface and not turf, surely.

The game began with Calgary dominating possession as their opponents dropped back into a disciplined ‘trap’.  Saskatoon defenders regularly sacrificed their bodies to block shots and goalie Jeff Dobchuck pulled off a string of spectacular saves.  Luck wasn’t running with United either when Calvin Campbell cracked  a shot off the inside of the post, wheeled in celebration with an arm in the air only to quickly cut his celebration short when the ball rebounded back into play, defying the laws of physics.

Calgary dominated but something was missing.  There was no sense of urgency and players regularly tried to force balls through the trap with no hope of a positive outcome.  However, it was still a shock when Brett Levi scored with 2:51 remaining in the second period.  No need to panic, just sharpen up a bit and everything will fall into place.

United Way of Calgary and Area team up with Calgary United Soccer Club

February 18th, 2010‐ Calgary, AB – Getting kids away from television and video games by encouraging participation in sports and recreation is a shared goal of Calgary United FC and United Way of Calgary and Area. The two organizations have now come together to help make a difference in children’s lives.

Founded in 2007, Calgary United FC has enlisted Calgary’s best players to take on soccer teams from across North America. After a successful first season, the club is encouraging more of the community to come out and support the team during its home games.

“Soccer is the most played and watched sport in the world. As Calgary becomes a more multicultural community, soccer is a sport that will bring the city together,” says Chris Baker, President of CUFC.

“Calgary United games are a great way for families to spend time together. These games also promote activity for kids because after watching a game, a lot of kids want to get more involved by playing on a team of their own,” he says.

On February 20th 2010, Calgary United FC and United Way will host a home game against Saskatoon – its biggest competition in the league, this season. If they win this game, the team will be very close to securing a spot in the North American final in San Diego this March.

Donations, including proceeds from the 50/50 draw at the game, will be made to United Way.

“This is a fantastic new partnership for United Way. We are pleased to be involved with Calgary United FC because it’s focused on bringing the community together and making a difference in children’s lives,” says Ruth Ramsden‐Wood, President of United Way of Calgary and Area.
