At last… Monkey… Back… GONE!

Finally!  Calgary tossed the proverbial monkey off its back with a thrilling 4-2 victory over provincial rivals Edmonton.  Edmonton had beaten Calgary in their six previous encounters by one goal, two of the games being decided in overtime.  But Saturday night, in front of another packed house, United outplayed a young Edmonton team to end the trend.

Calgary welcomed back star midfielder Nic Reyes and former youth international Patrick Kelly.  Edmonton were missing a few senior players through injury and fielded a young team which included former CUFC teenager Dean Northover.

United took an early lead when Felix Napuri netted after playing a neat wall pass with Damir Jesic, just three minutes in to the first quarter.  Jesic himself extended the lead with two minutes  left in the  quarter when he slotted home from close range.  Calgary extended the lead to 3-0 when Napuri scored his fourth goal of the season from a Mike Ortega pass.  With four minutes left in the half Scott Gilroy smashed home after Marcel Galaszkiewicz had brilliantly scrambled away a couple of close-in shots. 3-1, but more importantly Edmonton began to believe that they could come back.

Calgary inflicts first loss on San Diego Sockers

Calgary United pulled off something of a shock by beating high flying San Diego Sockers 6-4 on Saturday night in front of a packed house at the Subway Soccer Centre. Prior to venturing north of the border to take on United, San Diego had a record of 11 wins in 11 games, scoring 110 goals in the process.

However, the Calgary team went into the game confident in its ability, having taken on and playing close, or beating, the best that the US had to offer last season. “I think we’ll beat them… the boys are feeling good” coach Troye Flannery predicted before the game; despite the team missing two of its stars: Nic Reyes, out with an injury and ex-Canadian youth national player Pat Kelly, who was unavailable for personal reasons.

Calgary drop first on the Road in a close one….again!

Calgary United suffered a 4-3 defeat to arch-rivals the Edmonton Drillers in its season opener on Saturday night away in Edmonton. This is United’s sixth consecutive defeat to the Drillers, all of which have been by one goal.

Calgary suffered an early blow when star midfielder Nic Reyes failed a pre-match fitness test. Reyes was replaced in the lineup by Calvin Campbell. United’s luck did not improve after the whistle had blown as a series of bizarre refereeing decisions lead to Edmonton receiving a string of power-play opportunities, on two of which they scored. At one point in the second quarter Calgary had four players in the penalty box, as many players as they had left on the bench! However United did themselves no favors by missing two hockey style penalty shots, awarded against Edmonton for fouls which stopped clear goal scoring opportunities, which could have leveled the score.
