United Way of Calgary and Area team up with Calgary United Soccer Club
Founded in 2007, Calgary United FC has enlisted Calgary’s best players to take on soccer teams from across North America. After a successful first season, the club is encouraging more of the community to come out and support the team during its home games.
“Soccer is the most played and watched sport in the world. As Calgary becomes a more multicultural community, soccer is a sport that will bring the city together,” says Chris Baker, President of CUFC.
“Calgary United games are a great way for families to spend time together. These games also promote activity for kids because after watching a game, a lot of kids want to get more involved by playing on a team of their own,” he says.
On February 20th 2010, Calgary United FC and United Way will host a home game against Saskatoon – its biggest competition in the league, this season. If they win this game, the team will be very close to securing a spot in the North American final in San Diego this March.
Donations, including proceeds from the 50/50 draw at the game, will be made to United Way.
“This is a fantastic new partnership for United Way. We are pleased to be involved with Calgary United FC because it’s focused on bringing the community together and making a difference in children’s lives,” says Ruth Ramsden‐Wood, President of United Way of Calgary and Area.
