United just had to win one of the double-header games against Winnipeg on Saturday night at the Subway Soccer Centre to qualify to go to the North American Finals in San Diego. I guess they wanted to go! Calgary played sublime, fast paced, accurate soccer and wracked up an insurmountable 6-0 lead in the first quarter. After that they relaxed and played the ball around, finally coming out with a 13-0 victory. Seven different players scored goals, lead by Mark Slade and Nic Reyes with three each; eight players had multi-point games. Goalie Marcel Galaszkiewicz made just eight saves to record the shut-out.
With San Diego a lock United made four changes to it’s line-up including changing goalies; Todd Spycher replacing Galaszkiewicz. The second game was a much closer affair, Calgary leading by 2-1 at the half. But in the end the home side came out comfortable and worthy winners, 7-2. Youngster Kevin Torres led the way with 3 goals and young debutant Callum Lowther had one goal and two assists.
So it was job done. Now United travel to San Diego to face the California Cougars in the quarter final of the North American Championships. I suspect that will be a bit of a different proposition!
